Durability: Fun: Educational:
Although this product is marketed to middle school and high school students, I can honestly say that I'm finding it very useful in my college classes as well (I use it to backup and digitize my class notes). At the basic level, the FLY Fusion Pentop computer is a digital pen that captures your handwriting and then digitizes your notes once it's connected to your computer (via a USB port that is located at the top of the pen). I was a bit worried about it recognizing my handwriting, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it digitized 99% of my notes correctly (and it's easy to correct the odd mistake). If you don't want your notes digitized, and prefer to keep the "handwritten" look, you can do that as well. The FLY Fusion comes with the FLY World application, which is how you manage your notes. You can view, save, print or e-mail your notebook pages from this application, as well as purchase new software for your Fusion (more on this later). Transferring your notes is incredibly easy-- you simply plug in your Fusion and your notebook pages are automatically uploaded. After your pages have been uploaded, they are permanently deleted from the FLY Fusion. The way the FLY World application manages your notes is also incredibly slick. For example, to convert a page that has both handwriting and drawings, you can highlight the drawings to tell the application not to convert those areas to text. The FLY World Application also has a nice search function which will search your notes for specific keywords. If this wasn't impressive enough, the Fusion also does loads more. It can calculate basic math problems, translate from English to Spanish (and vice versa), translate from English to French (and vice versa), play mp3s...the list really goes on and on. To find out more about the software offered, check out the FLY fusion website at www flyworld dot com. Some of the software is included, and some you have to purchase. I'm a bit "too mature" for many of the programs (I have no need for algebra software, for example), but there are some that will be of interest to adults as well. There are a few negatives. You do have to use special paper that the Fusion recognizes (160 page notebooks run 8 dollars or so), and the pen is a bit bulky. Also, this only works on PCs -- no Mac support yet.
